Healthy Fields, Healthy Rivers, Healthy Fisheries: ICAR-CIFRI Promotes Sustainable Practices under KhetBachaoAbhiyan at Tribeni
5 th November, 2026
Tribeni, Hooghly
Emphasising the critical interlinkages between agricultural practices, riverine ecosystem health and fisheries sustainability, ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, organised an awareness and interactive programme under KhetBachaoAbhiyan at Tribeni in Hooghly district on 5 November 2026. The programme witnessed the participation of 41 farmers and fishers, comprising 30 men and 11 women. The discussions focused on promoting the use of organic fertilisers, vermicomposting, balanced and judicious application of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and conservation of river ecosystems. Participants were sensitised to the adverse consequences of agricultural runoff containing chemical residues entering rivers and its potential impacts on water quality, aquatic biodiversity and fisheries resources.

Dr. PradipDey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, in his message, highlighted the importance of translating scientific knowledge into grassroots-level action and emphasized that KhetBachaoAbhiyan provides an important platform for promoting practical and location-specific solutions for farmers and fishers. He emphasised the need for soil-health-based nutrient management, responsible use of agrochemicals, scientific pond management, natural resource conservation and climate-resilient production systems to enhance productivity while safeguarding the environment. He further highlighted the vision of developing economically prosperous, environmentally responsible and climate-resilient farming and fishing communities, contributing towards sustainable livelihoods and the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Dr. S.K. Manna, Head, Riverine and Estuarine Fisheries Division; Dr. Sajina A.M. and Dr. DibakarBhakta, Senior Scientists; and Dr. Sangeetha M. Nair, Scientist, interacted with the participants, shared scientific knowledge and addressed their queries regarding sustainable agricultural practices and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

The programme highlighted the intrinsic relationship between agriculture and fisheries, reinforcing the importance of responsible agricultural input management in preventing river pollution, conserving aquatic biodiversity and sustaining inland fisheries resources. The initiative reaffirmed ICAR-CIFRI's commitment to translating scientific research into community-level awareness and action. The programme conveyed a vital message: healthy fields sustain healthy rivers, healthy rivers support productive fisheries, and thriving fisheries strengthen rural livelihoods.
