ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute arranged a mass awareness campaign at Amtoli, Gosaba block of Sunderbans, on 05.01.2019 under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) programme. Sunderbans area of West Bengal has vast range of canals having huge potential for fisheries development. Sunderban area harbours 130 fish species and gradually the species diversity is decreasing due to lack of awareness and heavy exploitation of natural resources. Each house hold is having backyard ponds of different sizes. Canals are constructed for irrigation and cultivation purposes in each area. These canals should serve for livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. Triabls fishers in this area are mostly depending on these aquatic resources for their livelihood. Therefore, realizing for the need of scientific and strategic interventions in the area, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI took initiative to arrange a mass awareness campaign. Around 300 fishers participated in the programme along with local people’s representative. He stressed on the importance of conservation of indigenous fish species through efficient management practices and collective approaches for fisheries development to increase resource use efficiency. He also spoke on the importance of small indigenous fishes and their role in human nutrition and invited the fishers to ICAR-CIFRI to enhance their knowledge and skill for better fisheries management. Dr. U. K. Sarkar, HoD, RWF Division, ICAR-CIFRI addressed the tribal fishers and spoke on business opportunities and efficient supply chain management for fetching better return at market. An interactive session between the scientists and the fishers were conducted, where the fishers’ queries were clarified by the scientists. Dr. P.K. Parida and Ms. Sukanya Som facilitated the programme. At the end of programme a swachhata drive was organized with active participation of the tribal fishers and the local populace as well. The women participants were sensitized about the importance of the cleanliness and hygiene in daily life. The programme was co-coordinated with Sunderban Dream. Local panchayat leaders and social workers actively participated the programme and motivated the tribal fishers for fisheries development in the area.
