Honourable Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated four wetlands fisheries development projects on 13 th April 2018 on the sidelines of Regional Agriculture fair at Motihari, Bihar. These projects are being executed by ICAR-CIFRI in East Champaran district of Bihar. The four projects are:

  • Fisheries development in Kararia wetland of Bihar through empowerment of communities and stakeholders participation for improved livelihood opportunity and capacity building- an innovative project.


  • Fisheries development in Sirsa wetland of Bihar though in-situ fish seed rearing and fisheries enhancement techniques (stocking enhancement, pen culture) for tapping fish production potential of wetlands- An innovative project.


  • Fisheries development in Majharia maun of Bihar through refinement of site specific fisheries enhancement technology - an innovative project.


  • Fisheries development in Rulhi wetland of Bihar through stakeholders’ participatory fisheries management model (co-managment) in a sustainable manner- An innovative project.


  • Honourable Minister stressed that these projects will enhance the livelihood of fishers family of the area and enhance their income. This will also provide more employment to the fishers.

    Shri Sachindra Prasad Singh, Honourable MLA, Shri Bablu Gupta, Honourable MLC, Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fishery Science), Dr. A. K. Singh, DDG (Agril Extension), Dr. A. K. Singh, DDG (Horticulture), Dr. Gopal Krishna, Director, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, Dr. S. Raizada, ADG (Inland Fisheries) Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Dr. B. P. Bhatt, Director, ICAR-RCER, Patna were present on this occasion.

    ICAR-CIFRI is executing these projects in East Champaran district of Bihar. The module of operation of the proposed project would be technological support and execution of the whole programme by CIFRI, Barrackpore with financial support from Union Ministry and administrative support from line departments of respective states with direct participation of local community.

    Basic infrastructure required for fisheries enhancement, such as nursery pond, cages, pens will be in place in the targeted wetlands along with confidence and motivation of stake holders for adoption and sustainability. The project will require both fingerling and advanced fingerlings for stocking in cages, pens and open water.
