Awareness-cum-input distribution programme on ‘Indigenous ornamental fish culture and breeding’ held at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati on 29th February, 2024

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati organized an awareness-cum-input distribution programme on “Indigenous ornamental fish culture and breeding” at the Centre on 29 February, 2024. With the objective of creating awareness on indigenous ornamental fishes of Northeast and the importance of developing its breeding protocol, a total of 4 FRP tanks were distributed among one Self Help Group (Northeast Ornamental Atma Sahayak Got) in Kamrup (M) district and one start-up (Aquatica Enterprise) in Udalguri district of Assam under NEH programme of the institute. A total of 30 participants were present in the programme including women farmers. The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Senior Scientist and Ms. Niti Sharma, Scientist of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati.

Welcoming the participants, Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head of the Centre discussed about the importance of ornamental fisheries in North-east region of India. Dr. S. Yengkokpam interacted with the participants, explained the purpose of the programme and discussed about the status of indigenous ornamental fisheries in the state. Ms. Niti Sharma talked about the importance of breeding and conservation of indigenous ornamental fisheries. All the scientists of the Centre interacted with the participants and requested the beneficiaries to rightfully use the inputs for ornamental fish culture.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratefulness to ICAR-CIFRI for providing inputs to carryout ornamental fish culture and showed their willingness in propagating indigenous ornamental fishes in the state. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Niti Sharma.
