2nd Indian Fisheries Outlook Concludes with a Vision for Sustainable Blue Growth

The 2nd Indian Fisheries Outlook (IFO), a landmark event in the National Fisheries calendar, was held from 12th July to 14th July 2025, at the College of Fisheries, Berhampur, Odisha which is part of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology OUAT. The programme was Jointly organized by Professional Fisheries Graduates Forum (PFGF), Inland Fisheries Society of India (IFSI), Odisha Fisheries College Alumni Association, Rangeilunda (OFCAAR), ICAR-CIFRI, OUAT, Govt. of Odisha, National Fisheries development Board (NFDB) and Asian Fisheries Society - Indian Branch. The event brought together leading experts, policymakers, researchers, industry professionals, and students to discuss innovative strategies and emerging challenges in India’s fisheries sectors. The inaugural ceremony held on 12th July was graced by Shri Gokulananda Mallik, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, ARD, and MSME, Government of Odisha, who served as the Chief Guest. Among the other dignitaries in the dais, Shir. Suresh Kumar Vashishth, Principal secretary, FARD; Prof. Pravat Kumar Roul, VC, OUAT; Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science & Education), ICAR, New Delhi; Dr. B. K. Behera, Chief Executive, NFDB. Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR- CIFRI and convener of the programe welcomed the gathering with an insightful address on the ongoing blue transformation in Indian fisheries. He released the souvenir of 2nd IFO containing 34 articles by the distinguished researchers in the field of fisheries science. The Minister also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing advancements in fisheries technologies and innovations. The three-day event served as a vibrant platform for national-level dialogue. The IFO featured over 376 scientific abstracts and spanned seven major thematic areas including responsible fisheries, climate-adaptive aquaculture, aquatic health, post-harvest technology, aquafeeds, genetics, and socio-economic development. One of the key highlights of the event was the Young Fisheries Talent Award (YFTA), which showcased the work of 30 emerging young researchers. Their participation underscored the growing role of youth in shaping the future of sustainable fisheries. The vote of thanks for the 1st day programe was given by Prof. S. K. Udgata, Dean, College of Fisheries. On the second day, alongside technical sessions, a high-level panel discussion was held with participation from academia, government, and industry in the presence of Farmers. Shri Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, Hon’ble Minister for Commerce, Transport, Steel & Mines, Government of Odisha, addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for deeper synergy between agriculture, fisheries, and allied sectors to enhance livelihood security and market access. Other eminent panelists included Prof. P. K. Roul, Vice-Chancellor, OUAT; Prof. Prasanjeet Mishra, Dean of Extension Education, OUAT; Dr. J. K. Jena; Dr. B. K. Behera; and senior officials from the Department of Fisheries & ARD, Odisha. The discussions focused on sustainability, institutional collaboration, and policy support for small-scale fishers. More than 250 famers were present in the meeting and clarified their doubts on fish farming. Around 10 leading fishery industrial expert expressed their view along with prospectus and challenges in aquaculture sector development. The concluding day of the event saw the final technical sessions followed by the valedictory ceremony, presided over by Dr. K. K. Lal, Director, ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), who served as the Chief Guest. The session also highlighted the initiatives of the Professional Fisheries Graduates Forum (PFGF) and the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) through the “Phrase4Change” dialogue aimed at inspiring fishers, students, and professionals alike. Distinguished individuals were felicitated with prestigious IFO awards for their exceptional contributions to fisheries science and rural development. The event ended on an optimistic note, outlining a shared vision for sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient growth in Indian fisheries, anchored in science, innovation, and community participation, with vibrant cultural evenings that offered a glimpse into Odisha’s rich heritage through traditional performances and cuisine.
