Inland Fisheries and Their Management: A Learning Event for B.Sc. Zoology Students at ICAR-CIFRI
23rd July, 2025

Inland fisheries are crucial for food security, livelihood generation, and ecological balance, especially in a country like India, which has abundant inland water resources. With the increasing emphasis on sustainable aquaculture and responsible fisheries management, it is crucial to provide future professionals with vital knowledge and practical skills in inland fisheries management. With this background, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized a one-day workshop on “Inland Fisheries Management” on 22.07.2025 to educate and expose undergraduate students (BSc, Zoology) of Serampur College to the scientific, ecological, and practical aspects of managing inland fishery resources. The program aimed to enhance student awareness about the ecological, economic, and livelihood significance of inland fisheries in India. The workshop began with a welcome address by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, highlighting the significance of inland fisheries resources such as rivers, reservoirs, lakes, and wetlands in supporting fish biodiversity and rural livelihoods. He further highlighted the importance of fish taxonomy for accurate identification of fish species – is a paramount importance. Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist of the institute emphasized the practical demonstration of water quality monitoring and suggested to make the class interactive nature. A total of 23 B.Sc. Zoology 2nd Semester students including 2 faculty members attended the workshop. The workshop is designed to orient the academic and practical understanding of inland fisheries management among the students.

The workshop provided insights into key aspects of inland fisheries, including fishpond construction and management, aquaculture techniques, composite fish culture, water quality management in fishponds, induced breeding of carps, air-breathing and live fish culture, sewage-fed fisheries, cage and pen culture, etc. It integrates domain-specific insights and case studies to enhance the learning experience and facilitate practical understanding. Certificates were distributed to the participants. Students shared their feedback, expressing that the workshop was enriching, interactive, and well-structured. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Sr. Scientist, Dr. Dibakar Bhakta, Sr. Scientist and Pranab Gogoi, Scientist of the institute withthe technical assistance of Sri Sujit Choudhury, Sri Manabendra Roy and Dr. Abhisekh Saha, STA.
