Capacity building on “Taxonomy, Biodiversity, and Habitat Assessment of Inland Fishes” for emerging young researchers
16th September, 2025
ICAR-CIFRI successfully organized a training programme on “Taxonomy, Biodiversity, and Habitat assessment of Inland Fishes” at Barrackpore during 8-12 September 2025, to address the research constraints and potential challenges in fish biodiversity research of Indian inland waters. In the inaugural session, Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, underscored the critical need of monitoring inland fish diversity for the sustainable management of these resources and stressed the relevance of field-oriented training in fish and shellfish taxonomy.
Eleven participants attended the training, comprising one Ph.D. scholar from the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai (Maharashtra); two M.F.Sc. students from the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra (Tripura); one M.F.Sc student from West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (West Bengal); two B.F.Sc students from the College of Fisheries, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh); one Senior Technical Officer from ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; and four research scholars from the NMCG Project at ICAR-CIFRI.
The training encompassed a wide range of topics delivered by proficient scientists from ICAR-CIFRI and esteemed experts from research institutions, including the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI, Kolkata), Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI, Port Blair), and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (Berlin, Germany).
The training course curriculum covered taxonomy of finfishes and shellfishes, including clupeids, cyprinids, catfishes, snakeheads, and commercially important prawns, supplemented with hands-on practical sessions. Participants were also trained in biodiversity assessment techniques using various diversity indices and advanced software tools such as PRIMER, R, PAST, and the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK). Additionally, the course incorporated modules on habitat assessment, focusing on river habitat characterization and application of the fish-based Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI).
During the valedictory session held on 12 September, Dr. S. Samanta, Director-in-Charge, ICAR-CIFRI, officially released the training manual. The program concluded on an enthusiastic note, with participants expressing high levels of motivation and appreciation for the knowledge and skills gained.
