ICAR-CIFRI organized a workshop on Stress-free fish transportation system at Guwahati

A-day-long workshop on “Stress-Free Fish Transportation: Stakeholder consultation-cum-demonstration” was organized by ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) at its Guwahati Centre on October 17, 2025. The workshop emphasized eco-friendly technologies for safe fish transport and livelihood improvement of fish farmers and hatchery owners across the region. The workshop also promotes ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’, an eco-friendly product of ICAR-CIFRI can effectively use for live fish and seed transportation. The programme was attended by 80 people including Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, academicians of AAU, Fisheries department Officials of Assam, NFDB officials, NGO Personnel, Progressive fish farmers and media representative. Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati welcomed the participants and explained the purpose of the programme.
Inaugurating the event, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, highlighted the Institute’s farmer-friendly innovations and the use of the organic product ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’ to reduce fish mortality and stress during transport. He also mentioned that the workshop is a follow-up action to queries the raised by the farmers during the Governor conclave held in Assam during earlier this year. Dr. P. C. Bhuyan, Dean College of Fisheries, AAU, Raha appreciated the effort of team ICAR-CIFRI for developing such useful product for benefit of the fish farmers. Dr. R. C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam mentioned that the product will able to address the problem face by the aquaculture sector of the state for live fish and seed transportation. He also urge for more such programme in different parts of the state. Dr. Kanchan Saikia, In-charge, IARI-Assam, Gerua Centre, Guwahati addressed the gathering and showed interest for collaboration with ICAR-CIFRI for such noble research and development programme. Mr. A. K. Bora, In-charge, NFDB Regional Centre, Guwahati assured for NFDB support to the farmers and entrepreneurs for different activities of aquaculture in the state.
In Technical and demonstration session, Dr. B. K. Das gave a detailed presentation on stress free transportation system. On the occasion, a session on live demonstration of the product was also held. Dr. H. Chowdhury, Dr. A. K. Bera and Dr. D. J. Sarkar of ICAR-CIFRI and Officials of Glacus Pvt. Ltd. Kolkata demonstrated the product. The participants expressed satisfaction about the efficacy of the product. Many of them interested to apply the product in field.
During the interactive session, Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI; Professors of AAU present in the programme interacted with the participants on different aspect of live fish and seed transportation. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. P. Das.
