ICAR-CIFRI organized a training programme for fisheries officials of Department of Fisheries, Assam on “Integrated Management of Wetland Fisheries” at Guwahati during December 03-05, 2025

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Assam under Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded ‘Sustainable Wetlands and Integrated Fisheries Transformation’ (SWIFT) Project organised a 3-days training programme (03-05 December, 2025) on “Integrated Management of Wetland Fisheries” for the fisheries officers of Assam. The programme was organized under the supervision of Dr. B. K. Das, ARS, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Shri G. S. Das, ACS, Director of Fisheries, Assam; Dr. S. K. Majhi, ARS, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and Dr. R.C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Assam. The programme was coordinated by Dr. P. Das; Dr. S. C. S. Das; Dr. N. Sharma, Scientists, ICAR-CIFRI, RC Guwahati; Mr. K. Bhuyan and Mr. D. Dev Nath, FDO, Department of Fisheries, Assam. A total of 30 fisheries officers (including 11 female officers) attended the programme.

The training programme was inaugurated by Shri K. C. Samria, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Assam as the Chief Guest on December 03, 2025 in the august presence of Dr. B. K. Das, ARS, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore (online); and other Scientific and technical staffs from ICAR-CIFRI and the Department of Fisheries, Assam. In the inaugural address Shri. Samria emphasized the importance of this training programme for scientific management of wetland fisheries. Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore highlighted (online) the need for holistic approaches for the integrated management of wetland fisheries. Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati Centre formally welcomed the guests and shared insights regarding the training programme’s goals and objectives. Dr. R.C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries advised the officials to interact with the resource persons and also share their experience overall development of wetland fisheries.

The officers were sensitised on integrated management of wetland fisheries. Important topics like SWIFT project overview, management protocols for wetland fisheries, enclosure culture practices, fish seed rearing, macrophyte control, Soil and water quality parameters, fish health management, environment monitoring, fish seed rearing, community based fisheries management, engineering aspects of wetland fisheries, fish processing technology, fish marketing etc. were covered.

The valedictory session of the training program held on December 05, 2025, where Head of ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati, extended a warm welcome to the Chief guest Shri Virendra Mittal, IAS, Commissioner & Secy to the Govt. of Assam, Finance Dept. and SPD, ARIASS, Khanapara, Guwahati. He urged the need to develop a model wetland (beel), by the DoF, Govt. of Assam in consultation with the ICAR-CIFRI. Dr. S. C. S. Das, Senior Scientist and Coordinator provided a brief summary of the training report. Participants from different districts of Assam shared positive feedback on the training programme. The Chief Guest, Director of Fisheries, Assam, and Head of Centre distributed certificates to all attendee officers. Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Sr. Fishery Coordinator, ARIAS Society, delivered vote of thanks and encouraged officers to apply the knowledge they acquired during the training and congratulated on their successful completion of training programme.
