Rishia Reservoir,Odisha

An interaction meeting was organised with the tribal fisher communities of the Rishia Reservoir, Odisha, under the ICAR–WorldFish Collaborative Programme (Window-3) to review fisheries activities and address local livelihood challenges. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), graced the occasion along with officials from the Departments of Fisheries, Forest, and Irrigation.

Around 147 tribal stakeholders participated in the programme and shared concerns related to fishing practices, resource availability, market access, and income stability. The visiting team held detailed discussions on practical measures to promote sustainable fisheries management, conservation of aquatic resources, and improved post-harvest handling practices. Emphasis was also laid on enhancing market linkages to ensure better returns for the fishing communities.

A significant highlight of the event was the inauguration of a new fish landing centre and a community washroom, aimed at improving hygiene, strengthening infrastructure, and supporting safer and more efficient post-harvest operations. To further assist the fishers in their day-to-day activities, essential inputs such as fish feed, gill nets, and life jackets were distributed, reinforcing both productivity and safety during fishing operations. The programme concluded with a shared commitment among ICAR-CIFRI, state departments, and the tribal fishing communities to work collaboratively towards sustainable fisheries development and improved livelihoods in the Rishia Reservoir region.
