Sensitization Program on Fisheries Development and Livelihood Enhancement for Fishers of Mettur Dam, Tamil Nadu under SC-SP

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Bangalore, organized a sensitization program on “Fisheries Development and Livelihood Enhancement” on 05 December 2025. The program was held under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SC-SP) and was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, and Dr. L. N. Murthy, Head, Regional Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore.
As part of the program, fishing nets were distributed to fifteen Scheduled Caste (SC) fishers, including three women beneficiaries. The program was attended by 50 fishers of Mettur Dam, Salem district. Dr. V. L. Ramya, Senior Scientist welcomed the gathering and highlighted the contributions of ICAR-CIFRI towards the enhancement and sustainable management of inland fisheries. Dr. Sibina Mol S., Scientist, spoke on the importance of responsible fisheries and conservation of fishery resources. Smt. Umakalaiselvi, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Salem, Tamil Nadu outlined the various schemes available for fishermen.
Inspector of Fisheries from the Dept. of Fisheries, Shri. Subramaniyam, C., Mr. Manuneethi Sozhan, A. and Ms. Kavitha S. spoke on the occasion. An interactive session was conducted involving the fisher folk. The program ended with a vote of thanks. The program was successfully coordinated by Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Dr. V. L. Ramya, Dr. Sibina Mol. S. and Dr. Jesna P. K.
