ICAR–WorldFish Programme Strengthens Wetland Management in West Bengal
4th December, 2025 Chamta Wetland, Barrackpore,WB
Chamta Wetland in West Bengal witnessed a significant field-level engagement as Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Muslem Uddin, an international expert on sustainable aquaculture from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, interacted with stakeholders under the ICAR–WorldFish Collaborative Programme (Window-3).
He was accompanied by a team of scientists and research scholars from the ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), who participated in technical interactions and on-site observations.
During the visit, the team inspected the HDPE pen culture facility where experimental rearing of Mystus cavasius and Macrobrachium species is in progress. Prof. Uddin shared valuable insights on wetland and aquaculture management, highlighting the role of natural macrophyte control through herbivorous cattle grazing as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to mechanical or chemical methods.
He also emphasised the importance of scientific pond management and efficient hatchery practices, with special attention to broodstock care, water quality regulation and improved larval rearing techniques. The visit concluded with a detailed discussion among scientists, scholars and field personnel on strengthening ongoing field experimentation, promoting nature-based solutions and enhancing capacity-building initiatives for fisher communities.
Prof. Uddin commended the efforts of ICAR-CIFRI and expressed confidence in the collaborative initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable inland fisheries management in the region.
